Ryan family bible

I have a copy of a page of deaths from a Ryan family bible. The bible belonged to James Ryan, my husband's great, great, great grandfather. In this post I would like to try and work out the relationship between all of the people mentioned in the entries. The entries are not written in chronological order.

James Ryan, father of Daniel

James Ryan has identified himself as the father of Daniel, his eldest son.

1. January 25th 1906 at 3:20 in the afternoon my brother John died

John Ryan, the son of Daniel Ryan and Ann died at Uralla. (NSW 3306/1906)

2. August 28th 1912, at one o'clock a.m. my son Daniel died

Daniel was the elder of twins sons born to James Ryan and his wife Catherine Cleary.

3. September 17th 1912 Patrick Ryan Burrawa died in the afternoon

Patrick Ryan was born in about 1850 in Cashel, Tipperary, came to Australia as a boy with his mother and brother Timothy (Goulburn) and after living in Kiama and Gerringong finally settled in Burrowa  when he was 21 (c. 1871). In 1888, he was elected the first mayor of Burrowa. He married his wife Mary Kennedy in 1880 and  had children Patrick Joseph, Edmund Leo, Stanley, Mary Josephine, Alphonsus and Eileen.

Find a Grave and the NSW BDM suggests that his parents were Patrick Ryan and Mary Feeney
( NSW BDM 9754/1912)

At this stage, I have no idea why this death is recorded in the Ryan family bible. Research so far, has not discovered any connection between the two families other than Catherine Cleary, wife of James Ryan (bible owner) also came from Cashel and was born a few years before Patrick.

5. Mrs James Ryan died at ten minutes to 2 o'clock in the afternoon at Kentucky April 3rd 1913.

This death is of James' wife Catherine Cleary, the daughter of Catherine Cleary.

6. August 17th 1914, my brother William died in the afternoon.

William Ryan, the son of Daniel and Ann died in Uralla.

7. October 17th 1905 Brother Williams wife Died 9 years before him.

This records the death of Anastasia Webster, the wife of William Ryan.

8. November 27th 1915 Josie Ryan of Burrowa died at 2 o'clock

Mary Josephine Ryan, was the daughter of Patrick Ryan (3. above) and his wife Mary. Mary had only been married to William H Ryan since August.

9. February 19th 1920, my son John died in Lewisham Hospital Sydney about 9 nine o'clock in the morning

John was the twin of Daniel.

10. April 13th 1919 James Brennan died at Enmore

James Brennan was James Ryan's grandson and  was the son of Annie Ryan who had married William Brennan

There is now a change of handwriting.

11. James Ryan died 20th Sept, 1922 at 8:30 in the morning at Uralla.
Recording the death of James Ryan, owner of the bible.

12. Patrick Brennan died 27th May 1922 at 9 p.m. at New Park Enmore.

Patrick was the brother of William Brennan, my husband's great grandfather, so I'm usure why this is entered in this bible.

13. James J Ryan died 25th August at Uralla.

James Joseph Ryan, third son of James Ryan and Catherine Cleary died on 25th August 1923.

14. Margaret Ryan died 16th May 1924

Margaret Ryan was the 6th child and 3rd daugher of James and Catherine Ryan. She never married.

15. Annie Brennan died 9 July 1928 at Enmore

Annie Brennan (Ryan) was the 4th child and eldest daughter of James and Catherine Ryan. She married William Brennan in 1896.

16. This entry is too difficult as it has been written over the fancy border.

16. Madge Edna Brennan died 16 February at Armidale 1943

Madge was married to Thomas Brennan, grandson of James and Catherine Ryan. She died in childbirth.

17. Ellen Josephine Wynne died 27th December at Armidale 1950 at 6 o'clock in the morning

Ellen Wynne (Brennan) was a granddaughter of James and Catherine Ryan.

There is another change of handwriting.

18. Mary Ann Hewitt died 23rd February at Armidale 1964 at 9:30 p.m.

I believe that Mary Ann Hewitt (nee Brennan) later inherited the Ryan bible.

Not all of the Ryan sibling's deaths are mentioned in the bible.

Bridget Ryan died in 1937.

Catherine Long (Ryan) died in 1946.

Mary Ryan died in 1949.

Ellen Ryan died in 1954.

William didn't die until 1955 after the last entry.

I'm hoping that research will one day find the connection between the Uralla Ryans and the Burrowa family of Patrick Ryan.

Caroline Chisholm

I am currently in England visiting my daughter who is working in London. Naturally I decided I would have to spend some time on genealogical pursuits. The problem was where would I choose for a few day's retreat from London? In the end I decided to go to Northampton to visit the grave of Caroline Chisholm. Caroline is known as the immigrant's friend. She was a well known social reformer of her day. Why is Caroline significant to me and my family? You may recall that Caroline Chisholm was on the original $5 note in Australia. As well as her image there was a picture of a ship. That ship was the Waverley . Caroline agitated at the Home Office to reunite the wives and families of convicts with their husbands and fathers. On 22 June 1847 she wrote that she ‘had just left the Home Office and had obtained a passage per Waverley for forty-nine souls.’ SMH 9 August 1847, extract from letter 30 March 1847. My WW1 soldiers (2) - Ernest Lee Dawson

Ernest Lee Dawson (500) (1885 - 1968) This is the second post in  a series of posts over the next few years to remember all the men in my extended family who enlisted in World War 1. So far I have identified 26 soldiers who enlisted between 20 August 1914 and 2 November 1918 and I feel sure I have missed some. Of the twenty six, five were killed overseas or died here in Australia. My aim is to publish these posts on the 100th anniversary of their enlistment. Ernest Lee Dawson (my great uncle) was the eldest child of William Henry Dawson and his wife Bridget Mylan. He was born in the Cooma district of NSW in 1885. On 25th August 1914, less than three weeks after the outbreak of the First World War Ernie, a farmer who lived at Old Bonalbo  enlisted in the 2nd Light Horse Regiment in Lismore. Ernie had previous military experience. In 1906, he answered an advertisement to join the Shanghai Municipal Council Police Force, as a recruit. He was appointed on 10th Ja
